Which is correct and why?

I almost fall down or I almost fell down.

OR

I nearly fall down or I nearly fell down.

I almost fell down when I slipped on the wet leaves yesterday.

You can do the same with "nearly" - if you mean repeatedly, then you can use the present. If you a referring to a specific time in the past, then use "fell."
