Which tense should I use?

Andrew Jackson was the president of the United States from 1829 until 1837. He was/had been born in 1767.

Which tense would best suit the situation? I'm kind of leaning towards the past perfect since he had been born before he became president. (obviously)

The perfect tense is inappropriate for dates of birth. Past tense "was born" is fine.
