Which tense: past simple or past perfect tense?

I'm quite confused about the tense in the sentence below, can you guys tell which tense should I use?

"The guy who blackmailed my family was imprisoned" or "The guys who had blackmailed my family was imprisoned"

Someone told me that I should use the latter because "blackmail" comes first, then comes "imprisoned"

anonymous Someone told me that I should use the latter because "blackmail" comes first, then comes "imprisoned" You can use either one. The past perfect is only required when the sequence of events is ambiguous. Most native speakers would use the simple past.
