Which tense is correct? Past simple or perfect

He was sitting alone in a dark room, and then remembered how everybody had made fun of him in his youth. How do I continue elaborating after this? Do I continue with "they had made fun of him because he had been short" or can I continue with "They made fun of him because he was short". Are both versions correct?
