Which tense

Hello everybody,
I've a question: which sentence is correct?
1) Look at this man. He will fall.
2) Look at this man. He is going to fall.

Top answer

Hi, Both are grammatically correct, but the second one is more likely. In that sentence, you just predict what is likely to happen, but your prediction might turn out to be inaccurate. In the first sentence, however, you say that the man will certainly fall.

The scenario "Look at this man" is not much to go on, but 2) seems more appropriate if you imagine someone about to have a fatal accident. Such a situation is "hot". It requires quick action to save the man.

Compare:

- What will happen if I release this book that I am holding?
- It will fall.

Here the situation is "cold". The exchange is about a fact of science.
