which strategy is the best?

Presume I'm reading a text for example a novel or news and I find some new vocabularies I don't know their meanings. Which strategy is the best?
1) Find the exact meaning of the word via Oxford dictionary and set down that specific meaning along with an example of that specific usage.
2) Find all the meanings that those words have and set them down along with an example for per usage of each word.
