Imaginary means 'existing only in the imagination, not real', whereas imaginative means 'having or showing a high degree of imagination'. Both words can be applied to people as well as things; an imaginary person is one who does not really exist (e.g. is fictitious), whereas an imaginative person is one who is creative or inventive.
