You can expect that you won't be put in the same class as Helga.
Vs
You can't expect to be put in the same class as Helga.

The meaning is essentially the same, but the second is more idiomatic in my opinion.

I didn't read them as having the same meaning.

The first says you won't be in the same class. You can expect that to be the case.

The second says it may or may not happen, but don't build plans around it happening.
