Which sentence is correct tense format?

I'm on the fence about which tense to use in the following sentences:

"Life always has its ups and downs. If it doesn't, you'd be dead."

OR

"Life always has its ups and downs. If it didn't, you'd be dead."

Anyway advice would be greatly appreciated.
