Which sentence is correct?

My mother and I are having a bit of a dispute. She wrote this sentence:

"I praise God that there is still a bunch of people with good common sense!"

And I contend that the sentence should use the plural "are" like this:

I praise God that there are still a bunch of people with good common sense!

I have found on askoxford.com that "a number of" should be pluralized. My aunt who is a teacher claims that "is" is correct, but I still think "are" is correct. Who is right?

If you consider "a bunch of" a number, like "many" or "several" then you should use plural.

If you consider that it's "a bunch" that is the subject of that clause, then use "is."
