Which sentence element is ...?

Hi Teachers,
Two question please:
a) Which sentence element is 'books' in the following question? Is it the subject?
How many books are there on the shelf?

b) Which sentence element is 'tickets' in following question? Is 'tickets' the direct object of the verb buy?
How many tickets is Caroline going to buy for the concert?
