That's because my mother language does not have this kind of tense agreement.

There's very little to understand. Just say to yourself:

In my language it's like this; in English it's like that.

They are two different languages, so you express yourself differently in one than in the other. In fact, you don't have to understand much of anything. You just keep practicing doing it correctly in English until it becomes second nature to you. Then you'll use English tense agreement automatically without even thinking about it.

Nothing will impede your progress more than resisting the plain fact that English just doesn't work like your native language does.
