Which season do you like the best?

Which season do you like the best?

Is the definite article needed in the above sentence? I personly feel that best is an adverb in the sentence and no definite article is needed. But you can see hundreds of sentences like above if you google. Are they mistakenly used or are they acceptable?

Thank you for your reply, Mr. Micawber. But isn't best here an adverb? In what circumstance would an adverb need an article? Also I have problem with the more...the more structure too. Is more an adverb or an adjective, in a sentence such as"The more you know the truth the more you will be frightened"?
