Which preposition should I use?

Is it right to say"hours of sleep by day and night" ?
A team is conducting a study about lifestyle habits, and is counting the "hours of sleep during both day and night"..
I'm enumerating other items included in the lifestyle habits in the form of points separated by commas so I'd like to shorten the quoted sentence..

You can say "number of hours of sleep per day". That covers each 24-hour period. It is normally assumed that most people sleep at night, though it is also understood that there are exceptions.

I find it more precise to say "number of hours of sleep per night".
That would cover a period from eg 10 pm Monday to 6 am Tuesday.

Unless this is not your meaning.

The way I understood it from the phrasing of the question, the OP specifically wants to include sleep taken during the daytime.
