Which preposition fits better: [in] or [at]

I have made up the four examples below.

(1a) I don't like to eat in restaurants.

(2a) I am in the office right now.

(3a) I am currently working in a tutoring center.

(4a) Every year, I spend a lot of time writing messages in Christmas cards.

My non-native English speaking friends prefer to use "at".

(1b) I don't like to eat at restaurants.

(2b) I am at the office right now.

(3b) I am currently working at a tutoring center.

(4b) Every year, I spend a lot of time writing messages at Christmas cards.

How do you know when to use which preposition? Many thanks.
