Which part of speech is 'back'

Hi teachers,
Which part of speech is 'back' in the following sentence? Is it an adjective?
By then, he was out of the hospital and back at work.

An adjective, as in having returned.

i insist 'back' is used as an adverb here.

"Back" here is an adverb of course.

Better words: indicate, explain, refer to. You shouldn't use "answer" here.

Then the sentence, 'By then he was out of the hospital and back at work, could be explained by 'By then he was out of the hospital and had returned to work'. Right?

Had been/was
I prefer "Had been".
