Which or whom

Hi,

I wonder, should I use which or whom in the following sentence?

"Some would even say that the development of fully opposable thumbs is the first step in becoming the sapient beings which/whom we are today."

Thanks in advance, AL

Of those two choices "which", but I would use "that". Consider changing "is" to "was", depending on surrounding context. Consider saying "first step towards" rather than "in".

Thanks!

If I am not mistaken, "which/that" can also be omitted, right?
