Which option should I choose?

FYI- Dyrr is the lichdrow.
1. At the same time as that was occurring, Gromph Baenre learned of the impending duergar invasion and was preparing to alert the Ruling Council when Dyrr stopped him. A magical duel was fought between the two mages in Gromph’s own sanctum, but the lichdrow was victorious and imprisoned the Baenre wizard in a small glass sphere.

Active voice is usually better than passive voice. So, 'the mages engaged..." is better than 'a magical duel was fought".
At the same time that that was occurring (I know, it sounds odd, but I don't think we use 'as' here.)
