Which option is a better choice?

FYI- Crynus is the warlord
1. In the fight that ensued, Huma seriously wounded Crynus, causing the warlord and his Black Guard minions to retreat.

2. In the fight that ensued, Huma seriously wounded Crynus, who immediately retreated with his Black Guard minions.

Top answer

I would say this: In the fight that ensued, Crynus was seriously wounded by Huma and this led the warlord and his Black Guard minions to retreat. I think wound sound more common in passive voice. And, Oxford Dictionary says cause means to make something bad or unpleasant happen.
