Which one's correct and why?

1.Most people do not read more than twenty books in their whole life.
2.Most people do not read more than twenty books in their whole lives.

The first one is correct. 'People', while it means more than one person, is actually a singular word so you don't need to pluralise 'life'. It's a strange thing to understand but you would use 'life' in this situation rather than 'lives'.

'People' can be singular when it refers to a recognised group of people (plural) of the same race, nationality or cultural background. With this meaning, it has a plural form 'peoples'.

However, in the sentence this thread is about, 'people' is plural. 'Lives' is appropriate.
