Which one will be the correct way of reading

Hello,

Which of these will be correct way of reading?

He vanished as completely "as if he had never existed"

or

He vanished as completely as "if he had never existed"

I think it should be, "He vanished; it was as if he had never existed."

I quoted them to show the different ways of reading. In the first sentence the second "as" in the sentence is connected with “as completely” and has a different grammatical function where as in the second sentence it is connected with “if he had never existed”

Do you understand what I mean?

Ok, I think I understand. In that case, the first one sounds the most correct to me.

The reason I say that is because the "if" requires a "then" if it were to stand alone, separate from "as"

Since the sentence has no "then" and because of what the person is trying to convey, the first sentence is definitely the right way to read it.
