Which one to use?

1)Supposedly there is someone who died.
2)Supposedly there was someone who died.

A)Thank goodness he doesn't become a smoker.
B)Thank goodness he didn't become a smoker.

I would like to know which one is correct and when do we use those sentences?

That is a very unnatural utterance to me if we are talking about a corpse.
