Which one should I use?

I'm writing a short story in the past tense but I don't know if I should use 'had been' or 'was.' Is there a difference? I'm saying:

Jane never had the chance to introduce herself to Karen besides the quick greeting she gave Karen when she was forced to eat with her.

Is the sentence okay? Is 'was' okay here or should I change t to 'had beem'?

Thanks

To me, the sentence is fine. No change is needed.
