Which one should I choose?

Hi teachers. Which one should I choose?

She reached for a book lying on his desk, skimmed the back cover, then put it down again/put it back down.

Another question: Is it ok to use "reached for" or should I use "grabbed" or "took" or something else?

Thank you in advance and have a nice day.
