Which one should i choose?

The sentence is sort of strange, isn't it?
Why a father and not a parent? Would the involvement of a mother be harmful to the child? ~makes a funny face~

I mean exactly what I said.
I find the choice of word strange. Why "father" instead of "parent"? Does that mean that "mothers" should not be involved in their children's education?
