Which one of the statements is/are correct?

Hi,

I'm not sure about the following example:
"Which one of the statements is/are correct?"

I've heard people use 'is', but why?

Another question regarding this, is it "which of the alternatives (is/are) correct ?" when there's only ONE correct alternative and I'm trying to imply clearly that there is only one correct alternative?

When someone asks "Which of the alternatives is correct?" he or she is asking which alternative is correct.
