Which one is the subject in this sentence?

'The background from which and against which our ideas of God were formed, nature remains the supreme moral problem'.

I don't cleary understand the first sentence-'The background from which and against which our ideas of God were formed'. which one is the subject? 'The background'? or 'our ideas of
God were formed'? Could anyone tell me what is the subject and the exact meaning of the sentence as well?
