Which one is right--the use of "they" or "it"???
Overheard:
Female 1: What are you lifting up?
Female 2: Portfolios.
Female 1: They must be heavy.
Female 2: It is. (Was Female 1 wrong in using "they" so Female 2 had to use "it"?)

In any case, it seems that the first woman thinks of what was being lifted as plural, and the second thinks of it as a singular thing.
