Which one is right--the use of "they" or "it"???

Overheard:

Female 1: What are you lifting up?

Female 2: Portfolios.

Female 1: They must be heavy.

Female 2: It is. (Was Female 1 wrong in using "they" so Female 2 had to use "it"?)

Anonymous Was Female 1 wrong in using "they" so Female 2 had to use "it"? I wasn't there, so I couldn't get any clear impression of what they were talking about in any detail. In any case, it seems that the first woman thinks of what was being lifted as plural, and the second thinks of it as a singular thing.
