Which one is right, among them?

When asking the meaning of a unknown word,
1. what is a carrot?
2. what is carrot?
3. what are carrots?
4. what is the carrot?

I think, #2 is the most commonly used one and #4 has some
difference in meaning (used in specific situation).
I want to know more detail about the usages of these.
