Which one is more proper ; select from vs. select from among

I wonder about which form is more proper between select something from A (plural numbers) and select something among A (plural numbers).

I also want to know when you can use "select something from among A (plural numbers)".

Thanks for your tips as always

2. you may select among / from / from among slapstick, romantic movies, family and silent films
3. how to select among / from / from among public data collection

Is it correct to use "from among" with verbs like: "love", "like", etc., to express and emphasise preference of one object over others? E.g., could we say/write:
"From among a great number of people, we like only certain ones, and not others"
or should we say/write:
"Among a great number of people, we like only certain ones, and not others"
Which one would be correct
