Which one is more natural and why?

"Compassion he shows to other people is not much."
"The compassion he shows to other people is not much."

Top answer

" The second is more natural because we use "the" in so many cases where there is an accompanying relative clause. The sentence as a whole, however, is not particularly idiomatic. We would more likely say He doesn't show much compassion to other people.
