Which one is grammatical?

Hi all,

Behind every architectural design is without which any building couldn't have been built.

Behind every architectural design had been without which any building wouldn't have been built.

Which sentence is grammatically correct? I think there is something missing in both sentences. Could you please correct it?

I think the problem is that you've got the design and the building backwards:

"Behind every building is an architectural design, without which the building could not have been constructed."
