Which one is correct, said or says

hello, Everyone

please hlep me.

which one is correct

Checked by Mr Doe, and he says, "Well done"

or

Checked by Mr Doe, and he said, "Well done"


I know that says is present and said is past, but in those sentences which one is more appropriate.
