EverestCTS Which one is correct? You will hear both. I would have written "shocked to learn", though.

You will hear both. I would have written "shocked to learn", though. The first is backshifted, and the second is not. I would use the second because the first is a bit absurd. Of course you had been born before you found out where, so the perfect hammers a point that goes without saying. It is better to avoid the perfect unle
