Why? Why is the first one incorrect and the second one correct?

Word order differs between direct questions and indirect questions.

Direct questions have the auxiliary verb first, then the subject; indirect questions have the subject and then the auxiliary verb. If there is no auxiliary verb, a form of do is added to provide one for inversion in direct questions. Forms of do never occur in indirect questions.
