Which one is correct?

I left the army in June 2015. I had been in the army for four years.

Or.

I left the army on June 2015. I was in the army for four hours.

The first is correct. The second would be correct if it started 'I left the army on 23 June 2015'. Not many people get out of the army after four hours.
