Which one is correct?

How much money do you make per month? / How much money do you make a month? I've always thought that in these situations you should use 'a day/week/month', not 'per month', but recently I've run into 'per month'. This is how I thought you should use: 'I eat 2000 calories a day', but 'How much does this room cost per person/night?'. Am I right? Or both ways are OK?

How much money do you make?

Broadly speaking, in Britain and N. America this is a taboo question.
I never ask this, and no-one ever asks me.

Only my boss, my wife and the income-tax man know how much money I make.
