Which one is correct?

If only she was a better person.
or
If only she were a better person.

Because in conditional if, I recall that we should only use 'were' instead of was.

What about the case of I wish then? Is it:
I wish she was a better person
or
I wish she were a better person?

It's the same situation. 'Were' is correct, but 'was' is increasingly common.
