Thank you very much for your kind reply, but I have found people using "an" instead of "the", e.g. Nikola Telsa shocked an audience. When should "an" be used? Or is it like "an" and "the" can be used interchangeably?

There's nothing with "He shocked an audience" in terms of grammar. I'm just saying that when you're talking about an "audience", you usually have in mind one definable group of people who attended one particular event at one specific venue.

Take for example:

He just wanted to shock the audience. = He just wanted to shock that particular group of people who had gathered to
