I don't like any of your options. I would suggest using one of these:

- They did it free of charge.
- They did it for free.

I did it for free would be correct too.

Edit: "They did it for free" is also fine.

Some people do not consider "for free" to be correct English (and strongly object to it, in fact). I merely mildly dislike it -- even though I probably use it myself. Here in the UK it would never be used in formal writing; I'm not sure how different things are in the US. There's a discussion at

Definitely not. As Yankee says, they did it free of charge, or they did it for free.
