I don't know why but I sense that with "to" I may understand that you talk to John, you tell him soething but he may not be answering you ut with "with" this is not the case. If I see such a sentence I would surely think that John answers the narrator. (Don't forget that I only think so)

I think in this "the" is required before bank.

I've HEARD that: I speak "to" my subordinate but I speak "with" my friend. So I guess the explanation that with "to" I may understand that you talk to John, you tell him soething but he may not be answering you ut with "with" this is not the case.
