Which one is correct?

A. Why does this kind of thing only happen to me?
B. Why does this kind of things only happen to me?

Which one is correct, 'thing' or 'things'?

'This' is singular, therefore 'thing' (singular) is the answer you're looking for.

To use 'things', the sentence would have to read:

Why do these kind of things only happen to me?

Isn't "this" a determiner modifying "kind" instead of "thing"?
If it's true, then "this kind of things" seems to be correct.

The fact that "this" modifies "kind" does not really affect what comes after the preposition (of).
