Which one is better in academic writing?

Which one is better in academic writing?
  1. Now I can say for sure that I understand the diverse mechanical methods.
Or,
  1. Now I definitely believe that I understand the diverse mechanical methods.
Are two words like “say” and “for sure” informal in writing? Is “Believe that” a better choice instead of “say that”?

In addition to previous question, which one is more acceptable in academic writing?

  2. the world’s reserves of fossil fuels …

Actually, looking again, I suppose "for sure" could be viewed as somewhat informal. "I can say with certainty..." is a more formal way of saying it...
