which one is applicable here?

Hi,

I was looking at the Collins Cobuild Compact English Learner's Dictionary for the word 'experience' and came upon a couple of definitions among others there and they are:

N-U Experience is used to refer to the past events, knowledge, and feelings that make up someone's life or character

N-C An experience is something that happens to you or something that you do.

NOW, if you look at those two definitions, the second one seems to could mean to be a part of the definition of the first; the past events, knowledge and feelings that meake up someone's life very well be those things that are happening (or happen regularly) to you or those things you do (as I look at it).

But the first one is uncountable and the second one is countable.

NOW, next time I have some sentences with that word 'experience', how would I be able to distinguish between the two when the two seem to be talking about the same thing basically?

Hi, In my opinion, this kind of thing is hard to define in general terms, beyond the kind of definitions you have quoted. I suggest that you practice with examples to get a feeling for the language in this regard. For example, would you have difficulty deciding on what to say in these sentences?
