Which one is a better choice, 'two' or 'two of them''?

Geran’s closest friend growing up was Jarad Erstenwold, and the (two/two of them), oftentimes joined by Jarad’s younger sister, Mirya, and Geran’s cousin, Kara, had numerous small adventures in Hulburg and in the wildlands that surrounded the town.
