Which one above is better? Why?

Here are some questions puzzle me. I would be appreciated if you could give me a hand.

1. This picture looks not well at a glance, but we find it is a masterpiece indeed after discovery. 2. The painting doesn't appear to be good at first glance, but after a careful study we found that it was really a masterpiece.

Which one above is better? Why?

Sentence 2 is far from beautiful, but it is recognisably English. Things look "good", not "well". "Discovery" means "finding". "We find... after finding"??
