We had 5 people in total or we were 5 people in total? Which one is correct?
First, I don't think 'in total' would be appropriate here, 'altogether' is what I usually hear. jaleh We had 5 people in total To me, this sounds like you've hired some people and are talking about their number. It's like if you'd have said "We have five personnel in all" jaleh we were 5 people This is correct if you're telling the number of people that were present with you (yourself included), and you can simply say : "We were five (altogether)" BTW, I'm a non-native speaker of English just like you, I somehow wanted my information to be tested by a native speaker as you did, so don't take my response for granted.

jalehwe were 5 people
This is correct
Both are possible. "were" more clearly includes the speaker. "had" may suggest "had available for some job or task".
It is good style to write small numbers in words: five.
