Grammar

Which of the items in this group is different from the others and in what way? Polly was...

A) Polly was interesting; b) Polly was smiling; c) Polly was smoking; d) Polly was reading

My Answer: (a) is the odd one out because interesting is a participle adjective. All items are in the past continuous tense but the other examples use gerunds.

Could you please advise if this is correct and a good explanation? I am working on the pre-interview tasks for my CELTA application.

Many Thanks.

Not A). 'interesting', as you say, is an adjective, not a verb. Therefore A) is not in the past continuous tense. Only the other three are.
