Which of + single/plural verb?

I came across two example sentences in the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary : 1. Which of the applicants 'has' got the job?2. Which of the patients 'have' recovered?Why the first sentence has singular verbs, and why the second sentence has plural verb?
