Which of + pl./sing. difference?

1. Which of the patients have recovered?2. Which of the applicants has got the job?Both sentences are example sentences from the Oxford Advanced learner's dictionary.Why does the first sentence contain a plural verbs and why does the second sentence use a singular verb?
